Science Projects on Golf Balls

Science Projects look at the ever so popular sport that is now on the front pages of almost every sports magazine. Today there are an array of great articles and science projects to look through when looking into the great game of golf. Researchers are finding out many unproven facts and suspicions about golf and even some unique personality traits to the common athlete.

Science Projects on Golf Balls

Some General Facts of the Science of Golf Balls. The first Golf Balls were designed in 1618. Most of the first golf balls were made of wood. Later feather golf balls were designed. Most of these were made by hand and were rather expensive. They were made of tightly packed goose feathers tightly packed in either cowhide or horsehide. These were hand crafted and much softer then today’s golf ball. Back then these specially hand crafted balls were actually more expensive than the average golf clubs. Later some designers figured out how to use sap from some particular trees known as the Gutta tree, and produced a small sphere to become some of the first long distance balls. With a little heat, these balls could become shaped into a tight sphere. Some 100 years later designers discovered the technology of the "dimple". The technique in designing the golf ball with the dimples gives the strength and continuity for the hard playing everlasting success of some of the best golfers in the game today. Making the golf balls with dimples in the coat changed the game once and for all.

The distance a golf ball could be launched compared to a distance predicted by a mathematical equation.
